This is really a 4-wheel drive trail though obviously that doesn't exclude hiking it. However, until we entered Little Box Canyon about 40 minutes it wasn't a terribly exciting trail (technically we goofed and should n't have gone into Little Box Canyon. Little Box Canyon, another route that definitely sees considerable 4WD traffic, was a very nice change from the open desert. 11:32.", 525, 700);slides[50] = new Slide("51", "<ref>Mom at the Salton Sea.</ref> We are standing on a beach of shells. The Salton Sea is not much saltier than the ocean and so can support quite a variety of life from algae to fish. The current body of water started to form in 1905 when the Imperial Valley dike holding back the Colorado River was breached after unusually heavy rainfall. It took two years to seal the breach and control the flooding into the Salton Sink. Though the current lake (376 square miles; the largest lake in California) was created by man the basin has had much larger lakes within itself in the past. These former lakes, like Lake Cahuilla, were temporary drying through evaporation. The Salton Sea though receives over one million acre-feet (an acre-foot is the amount of water it takes to cover an acre to the depth of one foot. An acre is 43,560 square feet. This is equivalent to 1.2 cubic kilometers) of water from agricultural runoff thus sustaining its water level. 13:12.", 524, 700);slides[51] = new Slide("52", "<ref>Me.
